On a date, the girl asks the man about his ex-wife. And the man answers: "Couldn't work." In the context, I guess he meant: The relationship between me and my ex couldn't work. (1) Is that right? Assuming that my guess is right and given the context: (2) would you normally do without the subject in an informal conversation? (3) I would have gone with "Didn't work." over "Couldn't work." What would you prefer?
