Could you please help me to figure out the correct word for past activities.
Couldn't or unable.
1. I was unable to pay for it.
2. I couldn't pay for it.

Both mean the same thing, though the version with 'couldn't' is heard and said more often.

Nevertheless, it is wise to avoid 'could' as past of 'can' because it has other functions which may confuse.
