Couldn't/ didn't

1. I could have bought it but I couldn't.

2. I could have bought it but I didn't.

Does #2 make sense?

If #2 makes sense, it is obviously different from #1, isn't it?

I think the seconde one is correct because you are saying that you could do sth it means that you had the ability to do that thing so it won't be right to say that I could then say I couldn't you could do that but you didn't want or sth else prevented you from doing that but you still had the ability so number 2 is correct

because you are saying that you could do sth
it means that you had the ability to do that thing
so it won't be right to say that I could then say I couldn't
you could do that but you didn't want or sth else prevented you from doing that
but you still had the ability
so number 2 is correct
