Couldn't be much more... Metallica

I've always wondered the meaning of the first 2 lines of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters:

So close, no matter how far
couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who you are
And nothing else matters

Supposedly, the song is about a relationship. The man is on tour, far from his girlfriend. So I'd say he feels near her despite the distance. But the second line kinda throws me off.

I suppose it means "[this song/feeling] is very much from my heart", i.e. it is true loving feeling.

At one point I thought it was referring to the distance that could not be much farther than the heart, meaning that the feeling was what it counts, what matters, but grammatically would not fit as the line then should not have had the "more". Do I make any sense?
