Couldn't

I saw the following quote on Facebook:

A beautiful heart can bring things into your life that all the money in the world couldn't obtain.

Why "couldn't" is used here and not "can't obtain"?

Thanks

"couldn't" is used because it is talking about an imagined or hypothetical situation; i.e., imagining that someone attempted to use all the money in the world to buy such things.
