I wonder which is more polite:

1-1. Could you pass me the salt, please?

1-2. Would you pass me the salt, please?

2-1. I'd appreciate it if you could pass me the salt.

2-2. I'd appreciate it if you would pass me the salt.

both are polite, the only slight difference is that when you use could here, you give the impression that you're wondering if the other person is "able" to reach the salt or not, while the other one which is "would" is you wondering whether the person is willing to pass the salt or not, so I would chose could even if would is still polite.
