'Could you' vs 'Would you be able to'

Hi, I'm wondering if there is any difference between 'Could you' and 'Would you be able to' when asking someone to do something.

a) Could you call me back later?
b) Would you be able to call me back later?

Do these two sentences mean the same thing? Are they equally polite?
If no, what are the differences?

Any comments would be appreciated!

Anonymous Hi, I'm wondering if there is any difference between 'Could you' and 'Would you be able to' when asking someone to do something. Politeness is slightly greater with longer expressions, but it is mostly a matter of individual preference. Your sentences are synonymous and both very polite.
