Could you tell me which is the right punctuation?

Hi teachers,
a) Peter was the first one to arrive. In fact, he arrived ten minutes before one o'clock.
b) Peter was the first one to arrive; in fact, he arrived ten minutes before one o'clock.

Thanks in advance.
