Could You Tell Me What 'off him' Is?

In fact, Kim struck out five of the hitters he faced before Derek Jeter hit the game-winning home run off him with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.It was Jeter's second at-bat against Kim.

I can't get any purchase on 'off him'. This sentence seems to be perfect to me without it. Derek Jeter hit the game-winning home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

That is sports talk. You are said to hit a home run "off" a pitcher, meaning that that pitcher delivered the pitch you hit out of the park. The writer had to include it, or we would not be sure that Jeter didn't hit his game-winning home run off somebody else.
