Could you simplify the meaning of the 'ing' forms of the verbs?

CalifJim
roky00711. He ran into the wall, banging his nose.

He hurt his nose because he ran into the wall. His injured nose was the result of running into the wall.

roky00712. The soldiers attacked the families, doing the search operation.
