Topic: Effects of passive smoking

Smoking has been considered to be one of the most serious problems in modern society as it is the culprit of numerous health risks and massive loss in human life each year. Cigarette use detrimentally affects not only the smoker but also surrounding people. Passive smoking is as dangerous as active smoking and presents adverse effects on people’s health and personal state of mind.

The smokes from cigarettes or tobaccos contain thousands of chemicals, which include at least 250 carcinogens and toxic substances. Therefore, second-hand smoking can lead to a variety of harmful illnesses in both adults and children. In adults, passive smoking increases the risks of respiratory disease, especially lung cancer, which is a fatal health problem. It also degrades the lung functions of men and women, leading to health decline over time. In children, besides detrimental health problems, passive smoking is the culprit of underdeveloped respiratory functions. In fact, a great number of children cannot participate in sport or outdoor activities because of inefficient lung functions result from harmful smoke inhaled when somebody often smokes near them such as their fathers. Therefore, these children cannot have fully developed physical health.

In addition to health effects, passive smoking also badly affects personal mood. Cigarette smoke is repulsive. It harms moods of those who are exposed to it, particularly in a public or office environment. Non-smokers feel annoyed when having to inhale harmful and disgusting smoke because it ruins their feelings or working spirits. For instance, a person waiting for his business partner at a coffee shop and has to experience someone smoking next to him. His clothes will be smelly; he will feel irritated and eventually less confident to do business.

Passive smoking is a dangerous health hazard and is considered to be as adverse as direct smoking. This phenomenon spoils both individual's health and well-being.
