The context:
‘Yes. And because of my book about the old president, and the government of this country. It was a very angry book. Do you remember?’ Alex smiled. ‘But the old president read it, and liked it. He wasn’t a bad man, and he wanted a better life for the people.

Which one is more appropriate, if they are?
a) Did the old president enjoy Alex's book?
Yes, he did. Alex said he had liked it.
b) Was the old president pleased with Alex's book?
Yes, he was was. Alex said he had liked it.

Well, I question the wisdom of using fragments in an exercise for learners, unless you point out in your classes that it is very common for people to use sentence fragments when they are speaking.
