Could you please tell me the meaning of 'happen to' in this sentence

Hi there teachers,

I have a sentence which heard in a movie, but I am not sure what it means. Could you help me please with it?

Here's the sentence:

If I happen to bump into Janet, I will tell her to call you.

I'm cofused of the phrase 'happen to'. What does it mean, please? And also, please tell me the synonymous of it if it has some.

Emotion: smile Thank you very much.

I can't think of a synonym, but it's simply a more tentative version of "If I bump into..."

In other words, the speaker doesn't really expect to bump into Janet.
