Could you please tell me, how to talk about past possibilities and past abilities in English ? And please tell how to ask this question like a native english speaker?

Thanks in advance, i beg your apologies for my horrible English, I'm a beginner, trying to improve my English with the help of few books and Internet and that's all I have.
