The money spent by government on space programmes would be better spent on vital public services such as schools and hospitals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, government in some countries spend a huge amount of money on space exploration programmes. In my opinion, I think that this is a waste of money, and the expenses on these programmes should be shifted to other aspects such as public services to improve living conditions of their residents.

I believe that for a variety of reasons, the government should reconsider about the space programmes. Firstly, the process of training astronauts and developing high-end technology for the space exploration are extremely expensive. There are also risks that could cost astronauts their lives. Secondly, these programmes don’t bring any benefits to our daily lives. Instead of building schools, hospitals or finding remedies to cure diseases, the governments choose to spend millions of dollars to spaceships. And they are sent to other planets in the solar system just to collect soil, water samples for analyses and researches. Until now, these researches haven’t made any changes to our lives, except that it costs a vast amount of money and resources.

In fact, we are now facing a lot of problems on earth including climate changes, famine, natural disasters and so on. It is much cheaper to train public service workers than to train scientists, astronauts and engineers who work on space exploration projects. Furthermore, these public servants could create straightforward benefits to our daily lives because we all use schools, hospital and need the security that the police provide. If the expenses on space projects were reallocated, thousands of people could be saved from famine or could have a better living condition.

In conclusion, my view is that the governments should spend money on services that benefit all members of society. It is wrong to waste our scarce resources on the infeasible projects which do not improve our everyday lives.
