Overall, the global sales of console games showed a gradual decrease, whereas that of other three digital games increased significantly over the period shown. On the other hand, online games had the biggest rise in global sales in comparison with other types of digital games.
From 2000 to 2003, sales of handheld games, online games and mobile phone games increased moderately to around 15, 2 and 3 billion dollars respectively. By contrast, there was a downward trend in the global sales of console games. It dropped gradually to nearly 4 billion dollars. Over the following three years, the turnover from sales of handheld games, online games and mobile phone games reached a peak of approximately 18, 9 and 7 billion dollars respectively. However, worldwide sales of console games hit an all-time low of around 3 billion dollars.
