Some people believe that living in a horizontal city would be the optimum choice while the others would prefer to settle in vertical city. While there are some benefits to residents who dwell in city having low-rise constructions, I would argue that metropolitan cities with skyscrapers and high-rise building offer more advantages to citizens.
On the one hand, living in a horizontal city can be seen as advantageous for financial and security reasons. On a monetary level, it may cost people less to bear the monthly fee of building and maintenance service. For instance, if residents live in their private house, they will be entitled to spend their expenditure on the cost of living in a more efficient and economical way, without suffering from unexpected costs such as sanitation service from the buildings. From a security perspective, living lower to the ground is considered to be safer to inhabitants when emergencies occur. For examples, when a fire accident happens in the house, people can gain benefits from living not too high off the ground. In particular, it will take them less time to escape from the fire.
On the other hand, it seems to me that settling in cities with vertical architecture remains the best choice for residents. First, there would be more free spaces for public usage since more and more people shift their living preference into high blocks, which can act as a deterrent to land shortage. As a result , government would attach significance to renovating and constructing more public infrastructures such as hospitals, schools, movie theaters,... In addition, people living in flats in high building also lead a more convenient life due to the availability of a wide range of services on the ground floors such as supermarket, gym, restaurants,... In this way, these inhabitants can save a huge amount of time of going outside, which can also alleviate the traffic congestion problem.
In conclusion, while horizontal cities do offer some undeniable advantages to people to settle in, I would believe that it is more beneficial for the people to choose vertical cities with skyscrapers as their place of living.
