Could you please help with these Grammar Points?

Could you please help me correct these sentences I'm not sure of?

1

I had so much work to do that, I was still on/at it at 3 am.

I had such a long essay to write that I was still on/at it at 3 am.

2

I've been on/at question 4 of the exam for the past 30 minutes. It's a tough question.

as here in this

What question are you at/on?

3

I'm a very aggressive talker and person. I lose my temper fast. I've been working on myself. (can you say “work on yourself”?)

---------------------------------

Could you clarify for me please?

- He purposely took the next train (just) to smoke a cigarette before getting on.

- He purposely took the next train in order to (be able to) smoke a cigarette before getting on.

- He purposely took the next train just so he could smoke a cigarette before getting on.

These 4 sentences are for my book if you can give me your ideas.

1 What do you refer to him as? Your dad or your step dad?

2 I don't mind walking/taking/going this route.

3 From what religion or branch of religion has Lutheran derived?

Thank you so much

1) I had so much work to do that, I was still at it at 3 am.

("at work" is a common phrase.)

I had such a long essay to write that I was still working on it at 3 am.

(It is common to say "I am working on my great novel.")

I had a few questions if possible

1 If you leave out WORKING, you can't use ON? "I'll still be on it at 3am"?

Can you tell me what you think of my modified sentences with "to" and "in order to"?

- He purposely waited for the next train (just) to have time to smoke a cigarette before getting on.

alc24"I'll still be on it at 3am"?
This exchange is common:

Boss: I told you to get that report to me ASAP!!

Joe: I'll get right on it, sir.

(much later)

Boss: Where is that report????

Joe: I'm still working on it, sir. (Not - "I'm still on it, sir."; that does not imply any progress or effort.)

A few last thing if you'd bear with me,

alc241 if I were to leave out "working" what about : I'll still be at it at 3 am.?
It is understandable.
alc242 For the modified sentences "to" and "in order to" which one do you like best and are they natural as I'd like to use one for the book, if I were going to use "so"
I have no preference.

How come the answer is

"I refer to him as Mr...."

and the question is

"How should I address him?"

Wouldn't you use "refer" in the question

something like:

What do you refer to him as? or How do you refer to him?

Are any natural since in the question you use "refer"?

Thank you Alphecca

The verb address is asking for a formal saluatation (Dr., Mr., Her Royal Highness...).

Here are some quotes with refer:

How do the Iranians refer to America?

They refer to America as "the Great Satan."

How did the Senate minority leader refer to himself?
He used to refer to himself as "the abominable no-man."
