Could you please help me choose the right word?

ASK vs ASK FOR

1 I ask/ask for your opinion.

On vs AT

1 The south and north poles are at/on the exttremities of the earth, which is why its so cold there. (how would you say this?)

Where vs what

1 Where/what does your room overlook?

Instead vs rather

1 Instead of/rather than waiting for me come and join me.

AFAR vs FAR AWAY

1 He doesn't look good from afar/from far away.

WITH vs TO

1 Don't compare your action with/to mine.

In vs ON

1 I got a drop of rain on/in my face.

SOFTLY vs LIGHTLY

1 He knocked on the door lightly./softly.
