Task 2: Some people say that economic growth is the only way to end hunger and poverty, while others say that economic growth is damaging the environment so it must be stopped. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It is believed by some people that hunger and poverty can only be addressed by economic growth, while it is argued by others that this should be prevented because it does harm to the environment. Whereas the growth of economy may assist in eliminating poverty and hunger, I believe it is harmful for the environment.
On the one hand, the supply of goods and services creates more employment opportunities for people. This means a significant decrease in unemployment rates and rising income levels. As a result, the living standards of people can be raised and they have more money to pay for bare necessities and support their families. This is exemplified by a recent study carried out by a non-governmental group. The percentage of people who were impoverished decreased considerably by roughly 10% after approximately four decades due to the economic growth in Algeria in 2010. However, I believe that this does more harm than good because it might bring about certain environmental problems.
On the other hand, economic growth involves the process of manufacturing commodities and goods which creates industrial waste. This is then discharged into as lakes and rivers. Consequently, they are contaminated with poisonous pollutants that pose a serious threat to human health, especially the local residents. Moreover, the natural beauty of these water bodies is devastatingly spoiled. Subsequently, local and national authorities may have to spend even more money on purification instead of raising fund for people living in hunger and poverty.
In conclusion, economic growth may aid to eradicate hunger and poverty as it allows rising job chances. Nevertheless, it does not completely solve the problem since it harms the environment by raising the amount of waste.
