could you please correct my sentence?

People in Medieval age thought that washing is hypocritical. Human's history did not always develop forward in the way that it was supposed to be. History sometimes developed backward or stood still. Especially, history in Medieval Age, the level of history streaming backward was serious.
Could you please correct my sentence? Would there be better way to describe what I meant?

People in the Medieval period [or Middle Ages] thought that bathing was hypocritical. This is but one example of practices that have led us to label some parts of this time as "the Dark Ages," reflecting our view that history does not always follow an arc of unwavering progress, but can stagnate or even move backwards from enlightenment.

I'm sorry. I got a little carried away. An arc is a circular path. Think of the launch of rocket toward space. "Unwavering progress" means always going forward and upward."
