With a presidential campaign just around the corner, Korean presidential candidates are out there with their campaign pledges. One of the promises they say will keep is “democratic economy”. The term democratic economy is a newly-coined word, and it has never appeared on the school textbook. But these days, terms such as co-prosperity and fiscal democracy that have similar meanings to that of democratic economy are used by politicians very often. However, there is no guarantee that the democratic economy will be the key to addressing the financial problems people have. So, the politicians need to have specific plans if they really want this system to work. Because under this system, what kind of policies lawmakers purse can have a huge impact on economic growth and distribution of wealth. If the government starts to excessively intervene and regulate the market under this system, foreign capital would stop flowing into the domestic market, and auto, steel and shipbuilding industries that have a strong exporting power would also try to get out of this country. Therefore, the ruling and the opposition party should introduce plans that are practical and realistic. Because after all, a national economy should not be a guinea pig used by politicians to test their new policy that is not proven to be neither safe nor effective.
