Hello! What do you think about my summary of an argumentative essay? Please, don't take the topic for propaganda of drugs, as I just fulfill my homework for the University classes. I'll be glad for you sharing your thoughts on the problem. Thank you!
In 2000, George Bierson concluded that marijuana was harmful for brains, reproductive system, and the immune system, being in addition a gateway drug. However, the author of the essay doesn’t agree with the statement.
Bierson’s strongest claim is of the physical harms of marijuana proved by the tests of the monkey's brain. However, the monkeys were given extremely high doses, and the test’s sample size was too small. More current studies of human smokers – not animals – show no evidence of brain damage.
The argument against marijuana as a gateway to harder drug use also fails, as most of heroin and cocaine abusers had also previously used alcohol and tobacco; and the legislation of marijuana in Holland proved the decrease of the hard drugs use.
However, the author agrees that it is not true to claim that marijuana is harmless as one can become psychologically addicted. So, marijuana remains a controversial issue today, whether to legalize or criminalize it.
