People might call it a black market or underground market. But they should not prejudge the “system D”. It’s a DIY market where sellers are self-reliant. These days, the reason why people think the global economy is in a really bad shape is because they think “luxury market” is ideal. If they are always focused on growing the luxury economy, about two thirds working in an informal economy will be excluded. The informal economy where street vendors and unregistered sellers operate is as big as the U.S economy. In Africa, USC Foods, a food company, fount that sausages they make did not sell well in a store. So, they started selling in on the street. Then the sausages began to sell like hotcakes. In Nigeria, people didn’t really buy cellphones or the monthly plan the sellers sold because the users would be bombarded with long cell phone bills. But when the cellphone sellers started selling airtime at an umbrella stand, many people began to buy the cellphones and the airtime. In China and Brazil, there are plenty of fake goods, a sign that these countries almost have no sense when it comes to IP law. But some companies use this fake goods market as a market research tool- if China doesn’t copy their products, it could mean their products have problems. So, people should not underestimate the tremendous force this informal economy has.

In 2000, a movie “Island” was nominated in the Venice International Film Festival. This movie is about a guy who commits a murder and escapes to a small island. It did not win a prize, but was provocative enough to be a hot issue. Some of the scenes in the movie were too cruel that some audience even passed out during the movie. Kim Ki Deok, the director of this movie received director’s prize in the Berlin Film Festival and Venice International Film Festival since. Movie critics praised his movies but cited his movies are too cruel and bizarre. Why do Korean films raved feverishly by foreign critics tend to be violent? “Old Boy”, a movie filmed by Park Chan Wook was also very violent. Some critics said that many Koreans might have been traumatized by the wars, dictatorship and the separation of the two Koreas, and these might explain why Koreans movies tend to be violent. They added that Koreans writers and movie directors seem to be expressing the anger they have through the movies.
