Letter Writing

Could you please check my letter of motivation? thank you!

I am applying for the ***** summer school in graphic design. I hope the summer session will provide me with a solid theoretical and practical introduction to design and help me decide whether I should pursue a career in the field.

During my studies in college, I considered majoring in painting and took art classes. I did not pursue the option, however, and focused my studies in cultural studies, a far more theoretical field. However, I have always had a nagging feeling that perhaps I should have spent more time in design workshops instead.

Currently I work in PR for a large firm, editing and designing advertisements and brochures. I enjoy making my products visually interesting, but the confines of working within a large organization limits what I am allowed to create. For political reasons, more innovative designs are rejected and only the “safe” products are allowed to be produced. Attached you will find a few examples of the work I have done in my current job.

While I understand that the session is primarily for college students, I believe I am in the same situation as college sophomores who are just deciding what field they want to pursue. My college-level coursework in drawing, painting and art history would be equivalent to that of a sophomore art student. In addition, I am just as motivated, if not more, than the average art student because I have experienced the real world as a young professional, and appreciate how important education is.

While I have been out of school for 3 years, I have taken courses in my spare time and still have the work ethic of a full-time student.

I want a second chance at design, and hope a 3-week session will provide me with practical experience and theoretical guidance to challenge myself and contemplate a change of career. Thank you for your consideration.
