In the past few decades, crimes in many countries have been reduced to manageable levels. Many people, including myself, agree that this development is due to the utilization of modern technology such as closed-circuit cameras and information technology in criminal investigations.

First, crimes are quickly resolved when the act is caught on camera. In the last few years, many communities have been installed with CCTVs monitoring specific areas 24 hours a day. Illegal activities can be easily reviewed for investigation using the videos captured from such devices. For example, law enforcers may obtain the video recordings of an incident of a petty crime, which can help identify the perpetrators leading to their arrest. Many experts believe that the swift resolution of crimes serves as a deterrent to illegal activities. Thus, crime rate has gone done.

Second, with the help of the internet and computers, global police such as the Interpol can have access to an almost unlimited source of information. Whereas 50 years ago, the identification of international criminals was a huge problem for law enforcers, now their profile can be obtained easily from another country's database anywhere in the world. For instance, just a year ago, the big boss of a drug cartel in Mexico was apprehended in Japan, and his identity was immediately confirmed thanks to his digital profile downloaded from the Interpol network. This sends a message to criminal syndicate members that their movement could easily be tracked, their identity ascertained, and they can be arrested, contributing further to decreasing crime rate.

In conclusion, due to the reasons mentioned above, I firmly believe that modern technology, particularly closed-circuit cameras, the internet and computers, has had a profound impact on society in relation to decreasing criminal activities.
