Mellix also seems to believe Baldwin’s idea that language reveals people’s identity; one’s use of language illustrates to others the status of that person. Baldwin states “It is the most vivid and crucial key to identity: It reveals the private identity, and connects on with, or divorces one from, the lager, public, or communal identity (136).” Black English is an example to show clearly what identity is. Often the differences in language are used to determine the status of class, education, and heritage. He also states that the Black English holds great importance to the identity of black people according to the history. Black people made Black English as a language that enables them to describe their reality and establish their own cultural identity because without the language, people become voiceless and being treated differently. Mellix experience supports that language can reveal people’s identity. Mellix’s parents were speaking Standard English to whites in public. She states that “Speaking Standard English to whites was our way of demonstrating that we knew their language and could use it (82)” Her parents were acting like the master of Standard English because they were using Standard English as a political tool. Speaking Black English can carry with speaker’s values, ancient cultural heritages and a sense of identity. In short, Mellix’s experience support the idea of language use can show one’s identity.
