Could you help to formulate any patern for this gramatical confusion ?

Nowadays, i'm seiously considering about correct grammer for writing. i don't want any more ungrammaticall sentence for my future writing. i'm siverely confused about "Followed by infinitives" and "not followed by infinitives".

i'm trying to correct my ungrammaticall sentence.
i tried correcting the Switch but the lamp still did not work.

i just went through the grammer books they said there is some word followed by "-ing " with out to. such as stop, delay, fancy, consider. some are with to . such as afford, agree, appear.

could you give some sugesstion or pattern what are the way to resolve such a probelme?
