Could you help me understand this sentence?

This is from my grammar book:
"For coordination with and, however, it was relevant to distinguish further according to whether the subject of the second clause was present or absent."

I can't understand the sentence structure of that sentence.
Could you tell me, rephrase it, please?

The two sentences below are different. In (1) the subject of the second clause is present; in (2) the subject of the second clause is absent.

(1) Tom ate the meat, and Pete threw away the cheese.
(2) Tom ate the meat and threw away the cheese.

Paraphrase:
Where you have a coordinating conjunction (such as and), it is appropriate to make a further analysis. You need to see if the second clause has a subject or not.
