Could you help me understand this sentence?

Could you help me understand this sentence?

I found this sentence in the dictionary:
"The cucumber grows on a climbing plant."
It's Japanese literally translation says "a cucumber is a climbing plant."

I can't take the meanings of "grows on" as "is".
Is the original sentence correct?
And the use of "grow on" is correct?

Could you tell me, please?
