Could you help me to understand it?

Hi teachers,
Is 'age' a verb in the following sentence? I think so.
I just don't know why these two are put together, 'age––grow old––faster'
Why do they have 'em dashes'?
But chronic stress makes people age––grow old––faster.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Aspara Gus,
Thank you for your reply.
Do you mean that they can also be written like this?
