Identifying your own learning styles/preferences and strengths/ weaknesses

I have done the questionnaires provided in Brown’s book. I believe that I am a reflective learner. I do know that I am a slower reader. I always want to make sure that I grasp what I am reading before moving on. I think it is my strength because I will make fewer errors in reading. I will go on to read slowly so I can ensure I can grasp everything. However, I also find that being a reflective learner will hold me back from participating in class or from speaking the language in general. To become more effective in language learning, I will try to participate more even if I am not always sure I am right.



I also believe that I am on the tolerant side of the continuum of possibilities. When I face some difficulties about foreign language, I will not be bothered. I will keep that tolerance high. I will go on to make personal goal to learn to put certain unknowns on hold while I keep moving on. I will also make sure I will not get so laid back that nothing ever ‘comes in for a landing’.



I like visual learning, too. I understand explanation of concepts better when I read them. To capitalize my strength, I will try to maximize my learning input. Write word and sentences down, draw chart. Remember words by associating them with pictures. However, I would like to change this learning preference. I think I‘d better to be a visual learner because I cannot pay attention to the input of the teacher. It is difficult for me to concentrate on the lessons. To become more effective in language learning, I will try to hear a story more, use sound-alike words or rhyming words to remember vocabulary. I deeply believe that it is effective if I can have both preferences of visual learning and auditory learning.



In general, I am a low risk-taker. I cannot easily make mistakes without embarrassment. I cannot speak out easily and quickly in a group and class. I cannot write things down easily and freely even if there are mistakes. In the class, I will shy to answer teacher’s question because I fear I will make mistakes. It is clearly that being a low risk-taker is not a good characteristic of learning foreign language. I will try to answer teacher’s question actively, write more composition and find somebody proof it. I will also try to use some new words and structures so I can become more effective in learning.
