In 1970, the number of married people was precisely 2.5 million, but there were 1 million people divorce. The marriage rate remained stable in 1980, but drop to 2 million in the year 2000. By contrast, the number of divorces peaked at approximately 1.4 million people in 1980 before fell back to 1 million at the end of the period.
The majority of adult Americans were in married status in both 1970 and 2000. However there was a small percentage in 2000, at 60% compared to 70% in 1970. The rate of unmarried people and divorces rose by around 10 % in total, while a slightly drop was seen in the proportion of widowed adults in 2000.
