Topic: Some people say that old buildings should be pull down to give way for new ones. Do you agree or disagree ?

It is believed that urban planners should pull down old constructions to pave the way for new ones which serve modern functional purposes. In my opinion, whether to replace ancient buildings depends on their own values to the present society.

There is no denying that certain constructions possess no specific cultural or commercial values to their cities. With low quality and poor infrastructure conditions, these buildings worth neither continued maintenance nor renovation efforts. Accordingly, complete destruction and new plans for modern ones are acceptable and essential; otherwise the old-fashioned ones would blemish the integrity of the landscape and other forms of urban development. For instance, the building at Nguyen Cong Tru street in Hanoi, which used to be Romania’s embassy office, is now under knocking-down process to make room for an accommodation project. It is obviously reasonable that the government should clear up such useless buildings for other more beneficial constructions.

One the other hand, many buildings are truly of traditional and ethnic importance to a city, thus needing regular repairs and preservation rather than destruction. These ancient constructions, which aesthetically picture long-standing habits and century-old customs, not only raise the sense of national or regional identity among citizens but also attract tourists to visit and explore their cities. To put it another way, a country or town is identified by its distinct characteristics, and aged buildings help fulfill the expectation. The citadel of Nguyen Dynasty in Hue is a standard example. Despite taking large area of space, the heritage is carefully retained as one of the most outstanding cultural and architectural legacies of Vietnam.

All in all, I believe that only after the government has considered meticulously their significance is the demolition of ancient buildings reasonable.
