Could you help me check this essay, please? (IELTS Writing task 2)

Topic: These days, more and more people are going to other countries for significant period of time, either to find a job or to study. There are clearly many benefits to doing this, but people who live abroad can also face some difficulties.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of living and working in a foreign country.

Answer:

For the time being, many have tendency to spend an extended period of time overseas. However, there are both pros and cons of taking a year out. In this essay, I will discuss both sides and try to draw some conclusions.

Let’s start by looking at the advantages of taking a gap year. One of the main positives of this is that it enable people to broaden their horizons in various fields, which makes a large contribution to their hands-on experience and employment prospects. For example, this provides them with opportunities of meeting thousands of people, making a lot of friends who have different cultural backgrounds, and obtaining a large number of useful knowledge and skills from them. In addition, living abroad can lead to a better quality of life. A study in 2017 suggested that taking a gap year overseas will encourage a better work-life balance; particularly, there are several factors affects this such as warm weather or secure accommodation. Moreover, they can gain qualifications and language skills, which may improve their promotion prospects in their future jobs.

Turning to the other side of the argument, there are negatives too. One of the biggest disadvantages of living abroad is that people will have difficulties integrating in a new society. Those who live overseas find it hard to overcome language barrier and accept utterly different cultures. This may lead to homesickness and a sense of isolation. Another major drawback is that it can be challenging to start a new life from scratch. A majority of them may lack support network of friends and families when they encounter ups and downs.

All things considered, working or studying in a foreign country is never easy. Though they may gain life-changing experience and a better lifestyle, they have many challenges to cope with. Personally, I think moving overseas for a significant period of time is unforgettable experience.
