Could you help me?

Hello,
I am not sure if the following setence is acceptable.
Could you tell me whetherand it is fine or not?
If there is any error, please correct it.
Thank you.

Saying to my daughter, “You’ll catch a cold”, I let her go back home with scolding a little that she followed me in rain.

Top answer

I respectfully suggest something like: Telling my daughter "You'll catch a cold," I insisted that she return home, after scolding her a bit for having followed me in the rain.

Can I use "tell" with direct quatation? For example, [James told, "The bus is always late. We should take an earlier one"] is fine?

Could you tell me why [Telling my daughter “You’ll catch a cold”] is better than [Saying to my daughter, “You’ll catch a cold”]? How does the latter sound like?
