Robots and Humans
Day by day people leave their homes and go to their offices, schools, hospitals, banks or any other place in order to work, learning, see the doctor or just for a walk. During this time it is almost impossible not buy anything, not pay any bill or not use any other type of service. When we buy a ticket to use the subway, we will probably using an automatic machine. In our daily routine in big cities we are surrounded by electronic mechanical machines very similar to robots. Even not being noticed by the majority, they are doing their job allowing us to withdraw money from a ATM in a bank or helping doctors during a complex chirurgic.
Step by step automatic machines are becoming indispensible for simple and complexes tasks. The act to buy a soft beverage in a vending machine is so normal that seems unnecessary to think about the complex mechanism involved in it to deliver the beverage and the give the tip back. In hospitals patients who are in critical health conditions might have all their vital signals monitored 24 hours a day by electronic equipments that act likewise nurses providing food (liquid), oxygen and drugs from time to time according with the patient´s prescription.
The of robots industry which involves cybernetic engineering and artificial intelligence has boosted its development so fast and accurately that seems there are no limits for its applications now and specially in a near future. Neither the sky nor deep ocean can be considered an edge. Spaceflights are no longer a privilege or challenge to humans (yet the first crewed spaceflight was performed with a dog – Laika), as we could see the last mission to Mars, when the spacecraft landed on that planet the robot did the job as the same way or better than the astronauts had done when they landed in the Moon. Not mention the economics aspects, which are always a core issue, robots are more precise and anything that they do is following its program and if something goes wrong it is because of the programmer and not robots´ fault.
Without a doubt, everybody will have to learn and accept how to live with these technologies. Right now there are about 90 projects under development in different countries building in high skilled androids that are able to singing, talking, dancing and learn! Despite the uncountable benefits that the cybernetic and robotic engineering can bring, governments’ authorities must be strongly aware about a possible collapse in job market, letting thousands of workers unemployed or living through survival temporary jobs. The government must have to use appropriates tolls to regulate which group or class of jobs will be occupied for these new workforce. However the history has showed us that gradually everything finds its balance, no matter if it is an industrial revolution or robotics evolution.
