Could you explain the difference of the meaning of these sentences?

One of my students made a sentence the other day.

a ) I study about electric.

I think that we usually don't put the preposition after " study " ,
for example. b) " I study electric."
However, after I looked up into that verb on the internet, I found that
both sentences are grammatically correct.

Is there any difference of the meaning in these sentences?

eg I study electric motors.

I study about electricity. Incorrect. Substandard English.
