The calligraphy here refers particular to Chinese handwriting. Say, you were a tour guide. When you saw such a thing, you would introduce it to tourists. So how would you say to introduce the content on the penmanship work? "It says"? "There are some Hanzies on it"? I want to know the expression.

If I wrote them down on a paper and hung it on a wall, you may ask me "what do they mean?". This is a kind of expression. But, I want to know more idiomatic way to express. Could I use "what does it say" to ask a foreigner? Or could you show me more expressions?

You could also say 'How do you read that?'
