The name of my book is Surrender, by Sonja Harnett, an Australian author who won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in the year 2002. She is best known as the author of young-adult fiction. The story is about a 20 years old dying psychopathic man name Anwell. He lies in bed in his small childhood town, Mulyan, the countryside of Australia surrounded by mountains. When he slowly dies he recalls himself about his painful and lonely childhood life. At the age of seven he accidentally killed his handicapped younger brother, Vernon, who is loathed by everyone in his family. After Venon died become Anwell disgusted and unforgivable by his parents and everyone in the town but Finnigan. Finnigan is a dangerous, wild, unkempt and mysterious boy who lives in the hills beyond town. The rwo, Fannigan and Anwell, make a pact that from now on, they will be each other’s reflection. Finnigan will do just bad things that Anwell wants to do but can’t and Anwell , who changed name to Gabriel, will do only good things. This is a pact that help Gabriel to survive his cruel and careless parent, his loneliness at school and his guilt about the death of his brother. Gabriel calls theirs pact between him and Finnigan for surrender. Together they make them plans and share secrets with each other.

Gabriel has collected much small hatred against the townspeople. Several years later when his town is burned suspects Gabriel Finnigan as an arsonist. After that event has Gabriel’s dog, Surrender, been thief and robber after hanging out with Finnigan. To stop Finnigan’s sprit in its blood so forced Gabriel to kill Surrender. So the more each passing day, the less relationship between Gabriel and Fannigan.

The book is a little hard to understand at first because many words are new for me but it amazes me when I understand what every word she has written means. Her descriptions and creating an atmosphere are masterful .The fact book is short but the answers are hidden. The plot and the vocabulary are complex and there are many hints at things such as Gabriel killed his brother. This book is about fury, grief, lifelessness, failed bargains, drama, heartbreaks, worry, and suspense. Surrender is that kind of book that often raises many questions and causes the readers to think about the ending. The book slowly reveals details about Gabriel’s past and his horrifying secrets. It keeps you guessing until the very end then leaves many unanswered questions. The most interesting question is: do Finnigan and Gabriel exist or are they just in each other’s imagination?

The author seems capable of writing about damaged children and makes me feel empathetic, loving them ,understanding them and especially at the climax, feeling sorry for them.I would recommend Surrender to any high- schooler who fancies a dark, horrible and psychological thriller novel. I would rate it 8/10.
