Could you correct this question?

Hi teachers,
Context:
Peter: Oh, no! I don't have any money. Mary! Come here, please.
Mary goes to him.
Mary: What? Let me think … you don't have any money again, do you?
Peter: Er … well … No, I don't. Can you lend me five dollars?

If the question and answer is correct, Are the words between parentheses necessary or optional?
Question:
What was Mary's guess when she arrived where Peter was?
(It was that) Peter didn’t have any money again.
