Could you correct or confirm my questions please?

Hi teachers,
This is for a listening comprehension exercise. The text is from a CD. (The Elephant Man)
Context:
But … I know I can’t stay here long, and … I would like to live in a lighthouse, after the hospital, please. A lighthouse or a home for blind people. I think those are the best places for me.’
‘What do you mean?’ I asked.’ ‘Why?’
He did not look at me. He put the flower on the picture and looked at it carefully.

Assuming that we know that 'I/he' is 'Merrick', and the person who asks the questions is 'the doctor' and 'me', would the following be suitable questions and answers?

1. Where would Merrick like to move to? To a lighthouse. (Already corrected by Mister Micawber)
2. Was the lighthouse Merrick’s only option to move to? No, it wasn’t. A home for blind people was too.
3. Did the doctor understand Merrick at once? No, he didn’t.
4. How do you know? Because the doctor asked, ‘What do you mean?’ and ‘Why?’
5. What did Merrick do after the doctor’s inquiries? He didn’t look at the doctor and he put the flower on the picture and looked at it carefully. ( It’s too easy this one, isn’t it?)
Can I use ‘inquiries’ instead of ‘questions’ for number 5?

Thanks in advance.

2. Was the lighthouse / the home for the blind Merrick’s only option to move to? No, it wasn’t. A home for blind people / A lighthouse was too.-- You have no way of judging which answer the student will give to #1.
3. Did the doctor understand Merrick at first? No, he didn’t.

Thank you so much

Thinking SpainThen I guess it is better to remove number 1. Number 2 will be enough for the purpose. What do you think?
I myself would keep #1 and remove #2.
Thinking Spain would this be the correct question, 'What didn't Merrick do? He didn't look at the doctor.
As someone else commented the other day, I think, on one of yo

Hi Mister Micawber,
Thank you for your advice. I'll do it as you say.
Mister Micawber As someone else commented the other day, I think, on one of your other posts, it is not very natural to try to frame such a negative question: you're asking the student about a non-event.
