This is the context:
Merrick looked at her sometimes, but she did not smile at him or talk to him. I think she was afraid of him. I think Merrick was afraid too, because he was very quiet.
Could you correct or comfirm these questions?
a) Was the nurse friendly with Merrick?
b) What was the reason for that? She was afraid of Merrick.
c) Were the nurse and Merrick frightened between themselves? Yes, they were.

In the first question, with isn't the wisest preposition, and we don't know for sure if they are afraid of each other , hence I think . Was the nurse friendly to Merrick? No.

In the first question, with isn't the wisest preposition, and we don't know for sure if they are afraid of each other, hence I think.
