In recent years, an increasing number of people have a tendency to live alone, especially in the developed countries. In my opinion, this trend has both positive and negative sides.

On the one hand, the rise of one-person households bring about some benefits. From an economic perspective, living alone could reduce the expenses per month since we only have ourselves to care for. For instance, when raising a child, a married couple need to pay a colossal amount of money for the fundamental necessities like food, clothes and education. Moreover, the state of being alone would create more time and space for the work life. This would have a profound impact not only on each individual’s career development but also the prosperity of the country as more time is devoted to work other than anything else.

On the other hand, this trend could at times culminate in adverse situations. Firstly, in contrast to the satisfaction of being independent and not controlled by the family life, some people find living alone stressful as they have to bear all the daily adversities without any support from flatmates or families. Furthermore, in some emergencies such as when the person passes out or there is a break-in, they would be at risk since no one else in informed. Secondly, from a financial point of view, the trend of living alone results in a rising demand for housing. Growing property prices and rents might benefit some estate agents and businesses but place the general population under pressure, especially those who live independently.

In conclusion, I believe that the trend of living by oneself will have either beneficial or detrimental effects on each individual and the whole society.
