Could you confirm or correct this question and answer?

Hi teachers,
Additonal infomation: The person who narrates and speaks is a doctor.
Then I understood. There were three steps up into the cab, and he could not get up them.
Yes, I see. I’m sorry, I said. Let me help you.
I took his left hand and began to help him. My right hand was behind his back.

According to the context, could it be an appropriate question an answer?
How did the doctor help Merrick to get in the cab?
He took his left hand and his right hand was behind his back.
(for me the answer isn't very clear)
What about this one? He took Merrick's left hand and his right hand was behind Merrick's back.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Clive,
Thank you for your reply. Great answer! I will give the answer to the students just like this:
____ (suport) ____________ _________ phy_____________.

If not like this, they will never guess this one.

Hi,

I suggested that because your questions do not usually seem to encourage the students to think much for themselves, or to find their own words.
Whether they can, and their level of their English, are matters that you know best about.
