New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

It is true that nowadays many children spend their leisure time on playing with advanced technologies. Despite some obvious drawbacks of this trend, I believe that those are outweighed by advantages.

On the one hand, there are two major disadvantages when children devote much of their time to playing computer game or using the Internet. Firstly, exercise is a necessary part of physical development of youngsters, so playing in the streets or in the park with their friends would be an integral part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Secondly, spending much of their free time on computer or cell phones would lead to some health issues for children. If they keep their eyes glued to screens for hours on end, they must suffer from eye-strain. Waves from sound devices have tended to cause a headache for kids if used for a long time.

On the other hand, I supposed that the benefits are more significant than such disadvantages. One of the reasons proves this opinion that technology encourages children using their free time to broaden their knowledge, which is processed by a variety of interacting software. My nephew, for example, usually spends hours on learning dinosaurs through Internet. Another reason is that the Internet brings countless chances for youth to discover friends who have the same interests from across the world through many means such as chat room or social network like Facebook. As a result, the new technologies both accelerate the habit of self-study and boost youth develop a wide circle of virtual friends.

In conclusion, I would argue that the benefits of this trend are more important than its drawbacks.
