Of course, friends are always there to help you. However, true friends don't help you every time something comes up. Instead, they help you when you are really in need of help. At other times, they just pretend that they don't care. They watch over you atabdistance so that you can deal with your problems yourself.

The paragraph is fine. It could flow better if you simplified it a bit. "Friends are always there to help, but true friends only help you when you really need it. Otherwise they pretend not to care, watching over you from a distance, so that you can deal with common problems yourself ". It's just a matter of style really, and the expectations of your peers.
