In this era of technology 4.0, people are living with complete comfort thanks to the advanced equipment. As well as other technological devices, the internet has been the intimate friend of human life. Together with the development of the Internet, the significance of the World Wide Web is also dramatically enhanced in the last decade, makes it an inevitable mean of information searching. As a result, this tool is also applied by numerous students when doing their assigned tasks. The benefits of the Web are undeniable, but it can be a double-edged sword, the duality of a problem. The Internet gives people wonderful benefits but also not less immeasurable harm that students need to take precaution with.


The first positive aspect of the Web is that it allows students to access a wide variety source of information easily with low cost. It benefits them gain extensive knowledge with the most updated information in all areas. The Internet really is a giant information resource in which the available knowledge in all areas are positive help for students if they know how to select and receive proper information. Not only the WWW provides the most updated news, but it also helps students save a massive amount of time compared to traditional searching in books or libraries. Students no longer need to spend too much time on finding the necessary materials in the thick book that may not be properly focused. Now with just a computer or a phone is connected to the internet, they can find more information straightforwardly and effectively in a click! Additionally, the internet is the most economical tool for searching information. In the past, conducting a research cost a volume of money and time to interview people or collect the data, therefore, it is almost unpractical for a student or a group of students to carry out a study survey. Fortunately, nowadays, by creating a Google form or Facebook poll, they can collect others’ opinion for their survey for free. Also, those data researches that they found online can be solid evidence or references for their assignments. Since the assignments have a concrete and realistic supporting data, their quality would be enhanced.


However, not in every case is the World Wide Web used judiciously as a searching engine by students. Despite the enormous amount and variety sources of knowledge on the Internet, they are not parallel with the quality. The WWW is an updatable global platform, therefore, all people regarding age, education or nationality can edit and add information, but there is no single authority controls it. This, inevitably, results in the proliferation of unreliable and inaccurate web pages. One paradox is that the reference materials which are more easy to access are the more untrustworthy, as indicated in a survey conducted in 2010 by Izmir University of Economics. As a result, the ability to think critically, therefore, becomes indispensable for every student when they come to search for references in the ocean of unchecked information on the Internet.


Furthermore, using Web may lead to students’ decline in creativities and possibly plagiarism. When receiving a task or an assignment, students search on the internet as the first and only way to gather ideas and references. Once they are exposed to others’ articles or works, they would be influenced immediately and unconsciously. Students, therefore, find it difficult to think ideas outside of the box, which results in insufficiency of authentic and original thoughts. Plagiarism is using other people’s work with or without their permission and as one's own original work. It is presenting in many forms, but there is one form that students commit most while using the internet: imprecise citation. Due to numerous uncontrolled websites with duplicate contents, it becomes harder and harder for students to cite the exact source of their references. To exemplify, in an article written in 2010 on Psychology Today, Carson told a story when teaching assistant found out a plagiarized work but was unable to detect the authentic source of the material because there were six sites on the internet gave the same content but not one citing the accurate source.


Taking everything into account, it deserves to acknowledge that World Wide Web is a positive contributor to the effectiveness of searching information for students. Nevertheless, everything is paralleled with its downsides and Web is not an exception. As a result, the use of WWW should be taken seriously in order to assure the promised outcomes.
