Some people say that what children watch influences their behaviour. Others believe the amount of time they spend on television influences their behaviour most. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

While it is clear that watching TV affects the children, however, it is difficult to determine whether the content of the program or the length of time watching TV which affects more. From my perspective, although the amount of time does affect youngsters, it is the content of the program that has a more marked influence on them.

On the one hand, the consequence of spending too much time watching TV could be extremely detrimental. Firstly, the longer children are exposed to TV programs, the more possibilities that they would be addicted to it. When the children become over-reliant on TV for entertainment, they would miss the outdoor activities, resulting in a sedentary life which is deleterious for their physical health. More importantly, excessive TV watching impairs youngsters' communication skill, so they find it hard to play or live in harmony with others. Children would think that no need a real conversation with people around if they spent too much time watching TV, which could impede their social skill development.

On the other hand, the media images have the most direct effects on young viewers. First, in most countries, most of the TV shows have depicted wrongly about unsuitable things such as violence, drug abuse or sex, which contribute to unhealthy habits and unsuitable activities of youngsters. For example, we could impress that the alcohol-water is fashionable without considering their consequences, and keep using these products. In addition, in modern customer society, advertisements could affect children’s behaviors. The unwary young viewers could be easily swayed by captivating advertisements for junk food or video games, products whose target audience includes children, and so many pester their parents to buy these good impulsively.

In conclusion, though both factors have their own implications, I believe that the more important factor is the content. Hence, parental involvement is essential in controlling children’s TW viewing habits and in shaping a child’s values to help them enter adult life with a healthy mind.
