I agree with the typical nihonjionron. As the speaker says, Japanese people tend to be silent. A typical example of this is their behavior during business meetings. In Japanese society, where collectivism is greatly valued, people generally think it most important to keep group harmony, so they prefer not to voice their opinions loud and clear in an attempt to avoid conflicts. Therefore, they just listen to what other people have to say while putting on a forced smile, even when they disagree with them. This becomes a major problem, especially when they participate in international conferences. In most western countries, individualism is the norm, so this Japanese attitude strikes many westerners as strange and passive. Now there is even an expression to describe this Japanese trait from westerners’ points of view, which is known as 3S: Silent, Smiling, and Sleeping.
